Trust + Delight + Commit = He Will Act: A Formula from Psalm 37

“Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness. Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act.” — Psalm 37:3-5 (ESV)

I try to avoid formulas in my faith journey because I would never want to (a) limit God and the Holy Spirit, (b) assume I can produce fruit without God's guidance, or (c) try to use my “effort” to persuade God to act. However, this verse is as close to a formula as one gets! As it points out, if we (1) trust, (2) delight in Him, and (3) commit our ways to Him, (4) He will act. Here's the formula: 1+2+3=4!

But before we walk through it, hear this: this isn't a lever we pull to make God move, nor is it a test you pass or fail. It's a posture God lovingly invites us into — and even our trusting, delighting, and committing are things He grows in us by His grace.

Let's examine the three main components of this formula.

Trusting in the Lord (v.3)

Trusting in the Lord sometimes requires tremendous patience. I often pray for something over a long period, wondering if the Lord will ever answer my prayer. Then one day, it hits me — I am in the middle of His answer right now! It's like it happened without me even noticing. This happens because my focus is on Him, not on my circumstances. A heart that seeks God can endure and wait for Him, even in the most difficult times.

Delighting in the Lord (v.4)

Delighting in the Lord helps us realign our hearts with Him and His purposes. This is vital during times of struggle. Delighting in the Lord means remembering God's past actions in our lives. It also involves recognizing His current provisions, even if we have to look through the fog to see them. I like to jot down my thoughts in my journal during these times. That way, the next time I face a struggle, I can look back and delight in the Lord as I remember His deliverance. This is the key to that promise about “the desires of your heart”: the more we delight in God, the more our desires are reshaped to match His. He gives us our heart's desires because, increasingly, our hearts want what He wants.

Committing Your Way to Him (v.5)

Delighting in the Lord realigns your heart with Him; committing your way to Him is the next step. To “commit your way” is to roll your path, plans, and burdens onto the Lord — handing Him the outcome and trusting Him to carry what you can't. Part of that surrender is a commitment to holiness. When I struggle with doubt or anxiety, I do two things: I fix my focus on Him and guard my holiness. That resolve keeps my heart open to His prompting — because sin, left unchecked, dulls our sensitivity to His Spirit and clouds our fellowship with Him.

Put the three together: trust the Lord in all circumstances, delight in His past and present provisions, and remain committed to Him through personal holiness. As you live this way, your experience of God will steady you in any struggle — the peace that surpasses all understanding. And by the time He acts, you may not even notice!

Big Idea

Trusting, delighting, and committing aren't a formula for earning God's action — they're a posture that anchors us in Him, so that whether or not we notice, He is already at work.

Questions to Ponder

Are you waiting on God today to answer a prayer? Are you struggling to trust Him while you wait, or to delight in Him? Are you fully committed to the Lord today and, to the best of your abilities, living a life of personal holiness? Usually, we identify with struggling in one of these areas — which one is it for you? What are you inclined to do about it? It's in times of struggle that the Lord can speak to us. What is He saying to you today?

Application

With your journal in hand, take honest stock of the three. Where are you strong right now — trusting, delighting, or committing — and where are you struggling? Name the one that's hardest today. If it's trust, write down the prayer you're still waiting for, and ask God for the patience to wait with your eyes on Him rather than on your circumstances. If it's delight, list a few of His past deliverances and present provisions — even the ones you have to look through the fog to see. If it's commitment, name one area where you need to entrust your way to Him or return to holiness, and take that step. Then leave the outcome with Him, trusting that He's already at work — and watch for the moment you realize you're standing in His answer.
