Just Ask: The Simple Habit of Seeking God’s Wisdom
"If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking." – James 1:5 (NLT)
I love this verse. If anyone needs wisdom, ask God! It's that simple — and yet so often overlooked. Why? Maybe because we're used to handling things ourselves. Maybe because we doubt that God will actually give us wisdom. Maybe because we just forget to ask. There are countless reasons, but they all share the same root: we rely on ourselves rather than on God.
Think about how many decisions you make in a day — what to say in difficult conversations, how to handle conflicts at work, how to respond to your spouse or children, and how to spend your time. Most of us reserve prayer for major decisions and handle smaller ones on autopilot. But God doesn't limit His wisdom to important moments. He offers it generously and never makes you feel foolish for asking, in every circumstance, big or small.
James adds one thing: ask in faith, without doubting. That's not a hurdle to clear before God will listen — it's an invitation to trust the kind of God He is. He isn't a distant deity who's too busy for you or can't be bothered with your small concerns. The verse calls Him generous — a Father who delights to give and never holds your asking against you. So don't ask with one hand while still leaning on yourself with the other. Ask, and trust that He hears you.
The key is to make it a habit. Seek God's wisdom first in all circumstances, and over time it will become second nature. Like any discipline, it feels intentional and even awkward at first. But the more you practice, the more natural it becomes — until asking God is your first instinct rather than your last resort.
You might wonder how God's wisdom actually comes. Rarely does it arrive as a voice from the sky. More often, it arrives quietly — a verse that suddenly fits your situation, the counsel of a wise friend, a door that quietly closes, or an unexpected peace about the way forward. Part of asking is learning to watch for the answer, because God often speaks in ways we'll miss if we aren't paying attention. I call this spiritual concentration: training yourself to see God in everything.
And watch what happens over time. The answers add up. What once seemed like coincidence begins to reveal a pattern — God, faithful again and again. Each answered prayer builds your trust and reminds you why seeking His wisdom matters.
BIG IDEA: God's wisdom is always available — you just have to ask. Learn to make it your first instinct, not your last resort, and watch it grow you: deeper trust, greater wisdom, and a heart more tuned to His Spirit.
Questions to Ponder: Do you believe that the God of the universe and Creator of all things will grant you wisdom if you ask? Can you think of a recent time when you asked for wisdom and He granted it? Are you actively seeking God's wisdom in all areas of your life, or only the major ones? Why do you think asking God for wisdom doesn't come naturally — why is it so tempting to lean on your own instead? What would change if seeking His wisdom was your first response to every situation?
Application: With your journal in hand, start a simple record of asking. Title a page "Godly Wisdom," and starting today, before any decision, big or small, pause and ask God for wisdom first. Write the ask down, and leave space for the answer. Then at the end of each day, record what wisdom God gave, how He gave it, and how it played out. Keep it going, and watch the record of His faithfulness grow.
